Guild Activities

The Lake to Lake Quilt Guild offers members many opportunities for community service and fun.

The following is the list of our current activities as well as past projects. There are links provided for more information on some of our activities.

Library – Over the years our guild has built an extensive library of quilting books, DVD’s videos, patterns and novels. Our holdings grew to a size that became too large to transport. In 2021 we began moving these items to the Gorham Free Library in Gorham, NY. We encourage members to check out items and return them in a timely manner.
Members will need a library card in the Pioneer system (Livingston, Ontario, Wayne, or Wyoming counties) to take books out.

Biennial Quilt Show – A two day event held every other year featuring quilts, demonstrations or classes, vendors, shopping and more. Our next Quilt Show will take place at the Seneca Falls Community Center, 35 Water Street, Seneca Falls, NY 13148 on April 26 & 27, 2024.

Biennial Opportunity Quilt – A quilt made by members of the guild with tickets sold as a fund raiser.  In the past, members have been asked to participate in sewing blocks for this quilt. Tickets are currently available from any guild member.

Community Service Projects – The guild has participated in a number of service projects throughout the years. Currently our quilts are donated to three organizations: Child and Family Services of Yates, Ontario, and Seneca Counties, Agribusiness, and CareNet.
Past projects have included Christmas tree ornaments to raise funds for local food banks and stuffed dolls and animals. These last were phased out as the federal content and labeling requirements were strengthened.

By the Curb – Is your stash too big? Do you have extra tools, magazines or books you no longer want? Every month, just inside the entryway, items that need a new home are placed on chairs for members to pick up free of charge. Be sure to inspect the goodies each month. The church does not store these things for us, so please take home your leftovers.

Challenge Projects – Each year we like to challenge ourselves with an outlined challenge project. This could be to finish a project you have started, a new project using specific fabric, or a group theme project. Before a quilt show we often have a President’s Challenge.

Fabric Exchange – Once or twice a year members can sign up for a fabric exchange. We have exchanged all sizes, shapes and types of fabric. These can be used for challenges or in your own scrappy quilts.

Quilters’ Trunk Sale – This occurs once a year after a regular meeting. Members fill the trunks of their vehicles with quilting items to sell to other guild members such as hand-dyed fabric, and patterns. This is one of those times when hesitation, or speaking to your neighbor, does not work as the trunks empty rapidly and the prices are rare.

Quilting Classes – Learn new techniques or brush up on the basics from nationally known teachers or fellow guild members. Each month our Education Committee offers something to our membership.

Retreats – Carol Oswald, our founder, started a yearly retreat for the guild. We call it The Getaway. Traditional this is held the weekend after Labor Day at Watson Homestead in Painted Post from Thursday through Sunday. We now share this retreat with Keuka Quilters from Penn Yan and others. We also support retreats at the Le Tourneau Christian Center in Canandaigua. Regardless of location, number of days, or programs offered, attending a retreat is a great way to relax and do what we love – quilt with friends.

Round Robins – Each participating quilter begins her quilt with a theme or technique. This is then passed on to other members, along with a journal book for notes to be added. At the completion of the trip, each quilter receives back the makings of a beautiful quilt top and a journal containing the thoughts of her friends. Past robins have been applique, row-by-row, or border around robins.

Social Days – These are informal gatherings of members to share ideas, quilting and to get to know one another better. Bring projects you are currently working on or just sit, chat and have a good time.

Past Activities – These include: Block of the Month projects, Friendship Block Exchanges, a Mystery Quilt, Placemats for Meals on Wheels, QBs and Secret Pals. QBs stands for Quilting and Beyond. This was an informal group of guild members that met during the summer months to explore new ideas in the quilting arts especially fabric dying and painting.

A Brief History

The Lake to Lake Quilt Guild was started on January 8, 1986 by Carol Oswald of Oswald Road, Penn Yan. Carol put ads out asking if there was any interest in quilting. At the first gathering 24 women attended. There were from the communities of Penn Yan, Branchport, Stanley, Geneva, Rushville, Dresden, Canandaigua, Gorham and Hall. They met in the back room of the Old Mill House in Gorham. Within a year the room was too crowded and Carol arranged to meet at St. John’s Church on Swamp Road in Potter. The group met there for a few years before they outgrew St. John’s Church and began meeting at the Methodist Church in Gorham where they still meet today.

It was decided that meetings would be the first Wednesday of each month and that the president and other officers would only serve 2 year terms, excepting the treasurer. The first officers were: President Carol Oswald, Vice President Karen Clarke, Secretary Callie Hopkins and Treasurer Helen Warden (who served 11 years).

At this writing, the list of the original 24 members is not available. The following is the list of all the guild members who joined in that first year and there is an asterisk* by the name of those who attended the first meeting.
